Background and Art direction with Sue Tong

One thing I really struggle working with is background. But learning these few points with Sue has helped me to understand working with backgrounds more.

  • A background design should be staged for someone and not neat.
  • Manipulating colors in order for the background and foreground to work together is important.
  • Understanding color theory helps with the design.
  • When having a character in the background it’s important to have their colors stronger than the background.

I think this lecture has really benefited and motivated me to start taking backgrounds more seriously and spend more time practicing them.
