Storytelling Workshop with Lucy Lill

This workshop was very enjoyable and insightful as it helped me learn many things about storytelling.

The number one thing that I took with me after this workshop is the importance of having a file or a stash filled with things that inspire me, therefore supporting me with storytelling. In our everyday lives, we see things that inspire us to generate ideas, so it’s important to be aware of what helps us do the work.

What I also realized about storytelling is that it has many structures, but one element that’s always there is conflict, and it has many types. There is:

  • Character vs. Character
  • Character vs. self
  • Character vs. environment or place

Another subject that I found extremely helpful is Story Beats/bones which are key moments that bring the story forward. With an understanding of this, I believe it’ll be much easier now to create a story for my final project next year.

Here is an example of my understanding of story beats:

Also, knowing about character archetypes helps organize the story and categorize the characters you have.

One thing I found quite challenging was an exercise in which we had to explain to our partner a story we know and they get to pick we either talk about action or description. I found myself confused between the two sometimes.

The last point I will definitely take away from this workshop is caring about what the audience is feeling first and foremost. After writing the main moments of a story, writing besides it a feeling you think the audience will have is useful to know if the structure of your story is working or not.

Overall, I think this workshop is one of my favorites so far in this course.
